How do I start my vintage accessory collection?
If your Instagram and Pinterest feeds are half as good as ours are, you might find yourself asking “How do I start my vintage accessory collection?”
Hear us out— the best place to start is flipping through old family photo albums.
We draw most (if not all) of our inspiration from the incredible outfits we have seen our mothers wear back in the day. Yesterday’s style focused on artful silhouettes, interesting textures and of course, the perfect accessory. In our opinion, drawing inspiration from the past and from the ones we love is what makes your personal style all the more personal. And it will make the pieces you select last longer in your wardrobe.
When it comes to making the purchase: You only have to start off with one piece. Don’t go overboard. You want there to be true meaning and purpose behind the piece you choose.
It also helps to start small. You might have had your eyes on a vintage Chanel caviar leather wallet. And to that we’d say: GO FOR IT! Small leather goods are an incredible place to start your collection. They often don’t come with a monstrous price tag, so they make the purchasing process a bit easier.
Another great start is to find a perfect vintage evening bag. A good going-out bag comes with the power to wear, restyle and repeat. You’ll get way more milage out of a baguette bag than you would an obscure tote bag (though we must admit, any tote bag makes for a great travel companion..but more on that later).
Our last piece of advice is to select a color that you could see yourself wearing to any occasion. Earth tones are an excellent example of this. They allow you to carry the item into all four seasons, and they don’t restrict you to simply day or night. If you ask us, going with a black or nude is a sure way to incorporate a piece into your weekly cycle. However we do love a good statement bag when the time is right.
Like we said in the beginning, starting your vintage collection requires some soul-searching first. Isolate the vibe you are hoping to achieve, select a realistic piece, plan your buy and above all: stay true to the roots of your wardrobe. We want these pieces to be your next family heirloom, not the has-been item that you were influenced to buy on a whim.
We’d be foolish not to add that if you are having a tough time finding that piece you finally set your heart on, you girls here at Gimi Rarity would be thrilled to source it for you.
Happy shopping. xx
